Once I got off the plane I realized my phone wasn’t working
but I was in Europe at last. I would figure it out once I got on the bus. I got
my bag and proceeded outside. Come to find out that the bus wouldn’t be there
for another 40 minutes so as I sat and waited I tried to reorient myself and
figure out why my phone wasn’t working. Finally, I gave up, the bus arrived, I had
to load my bags on the opposite side but I got on the bus and was happy to sit
in a cushy seat. ( and only pay 7 euros for the whole trip.) Below I posted one
of the countryside which was beautiful and the bus was equipped with wireless
internet so I could kik and facebook! Yippee! I got to the central station in
Bratislava which wasn’t very nice at all. Basically it was a parking lot under
a few criss-cross bridges with a few kiosks. I stood around for a few moments
and saw the platform with my bus number so I went over. Then after looking for
a ticket machine. I finally realized I would have to brave a kiosk. So with
knowing no Slovak I walked up to the lady asked do you speak English? She of
course said no and I said bus a bunch of times and showed her the number I had
written in my notebook. I paid and she started speaking to me and pointing. I
was completely lost. She was signaling the bus over there but I couldn’t tell where
she meant so she came out and point. I shook my head and she had me follow her
but I had to run back to get my bags. We went around the building and she
pointed across the street. I finally got it and vaguely knew I had to cross two
intersections to reach the stop. Feeling a bit over whelmed I started on my way
almost there I thought. I got on the bus and went 2 stops just like the
director told me. I got off and continued the way the bus went (just like I was
told) looking for a gray building. I crossed the street in front of me and
cross to the left again because I saw a gray building I hope was the school.
When I crossed I saw that it was an apartment building and I was definitely in
the wrong place. By this point I was running out of steam and was about to give
up when this older gentleman started speaking to me. So confused I got out the
paper where I wrote the name of the school and pointed. He started speaking and
motioned for me to follow into the reception area of the building. He picked up
my bag and started moving so I had no choice to follow. He spoke to the guy at
the counter who shook his head and then went into the next room and spoke with
two ladies. I had NO idea what was going on but he seemed to have gotten an explanation
and started walking outside and taking my bag. He opened the car door put my
bags in and motioned for me to get in the front seat. At this point I had no
clue what to do. I didn’t know where the school was, I was dead tried, and he
seemed like a nice person just trying to help so I got in. He started driving
around the block made it to the next street and parked and got out (signaling for
me to stay in the car) to check out a building- which ended up being a museum.
So we continued and I tried to tell him the build was grey and he had no idea
what I was saying. We turn out onto the street and continued toward the place I
got off and then I saw a grey building! I started pointing and I saw the sign
on the side and it was it. I pointed and he figured it out and so he took a
sharp right, over the curb, the sidewalk, and the other curb into the parking
lot. He parked and helped to carry in my bags. I was so relieved to be there
and was so flustered I got lost. I tried
to thank him and took his picture to commemorate the first bit of Slovak hospitality
I experienced.
