My second day faired a lot smoother than my first. I went to
class this morning. I learned dakujem (ja-qui-yem) meaning thank you. Dobry den
(doe-bri den) meaning good day. And we did a lot of pronunciation and grammar
work today. Then had lunch with my roommate and the British professor (Ed
Turner), talking about accents and a number of different things. Also I got to
register for a half day trip to Modra this Saturday! Then another class and a
lecture on the ethnology of Slovakia. Yesterday’s lecture was on the modern/ 20th
century history of Slovakia. Both were very interesting. The Slovaks had been
through great turmoil in about a hundred year period. Totalitarian rule,
fascism, communism, rule by the Czech with a sprinkling of democracy and now
their own state. Today I learn about how the university here in Bratislava-
Comenius University- has been an important part in preserving the folklore and
the way of life of the Slovaks. Ethnology is truly the study of a way of life,
almost the same as social/cultural anthropology. Then a few people (Ed the
professor, another British girl who lives in Oxford as well, a girl from Vietnam,
and a girl from Finland) and I went to the restaurant across from the school
just to chat about the program. After that I went back to the dorm, had the most
interesting conversation about religion with Autumn, my roommate, and proceeded
to write these blogs and organize. I decided to skip the movie tonight and just
go to the one Thursday so that I could get something done. My phone thankfully
works now (thanks to my wonderful Aunt <3 ) but I won’t call because it is
2.29/minute! But Know I am safe and well getting to know the tram and the city
better every minute (even though I missed my tram stop and had to get off and
turn around once today). And Grandma you will be happy to know I asked one of
the SAS (Studia Academica Slovaca- the program) assistants about traveling in
the week between the end of the program and England. He said he can help me this
Sunday get it all worked out (this is Peter the 2nd guy who helped
me carry my bags). Tomorrow I have class and we are going to visit the
Prehliadka Bratislavsheho Hradu- the Bratislava Castle!!! I’m so excited! And now
that I am organized I know what I want to see and I can start sightseeing!!
The castle from afar!
