Day 13- Slovak Excursion- Part 3 Sobota (Saturday)

- Pribylina (an open air museum)
-Kremnica

Another early morning followed by a late (even later in this case) night but we didn’t have to leave until 7:45 ish. Surprisingly I fell asleep on the bus… go figure. Our first stop was an open air museum which consisted of a bunch of little wooden building. More interestingly though the building very actually from a place that is now an artificial lake. They moved the original building to where they are now. The church inside was beautiful and at this point I realized that most of the artwork especially the frescos where in pretty bad condition. I know that uncovering frescos is an extremely delicate task but it seems that not much work to do this throughout Slovakia has occurred. I am assuming that the art was covered up during communism and has just recently begun to be rediscovered. It is interesting to see this and a bit peculiar after seeing all the artwork in Italy where things were well preserved or where works had been damaged there was substantial effort to restore.

As we walked back to the bus (along with one of the other groups we had met up with) we got news that the D group bus was broken and we might have to go pick up the group. Due to this predicament, we were delayed but the bus was in the processes of getting fixed and so we were on our way to lunch. At our stop there was another wooden playground and so I sat, swung, and talked with Mária the Slovak assistant. She is really nice and taught me a bunch of Slovak (and I actually have been hanging out with her as much as can since we got back.) I also helped her with her english. Funny enough, the night before we started teaching each other tongue twisters in our respective languages. I taught her how much wood could a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood? And she taught me Strč prst skrz krk which literally means put your finger through your throat… and is ridiculous to say. Here again I had pirohy but theses weren’t as good. Also, they were served with a class of sour milk…. A traditional drink that apparently a lot of people love. I tried it. I did NOT love it. I gave it to the Slovak teacher I was sitting with. She loved it.

After lunch we went to a small town called Kremnica (where there is actually a huge comedy festival at the end of August). It also it the home of the one coin mint in Slovakia and has a walled city center. We could choose either the castle of the coin museum since we were running a bit late because of the other broken bus. I chose the castle; I was becoming partial to them at this point : )… and it didn’t disappoint. Another beautiful church and amazing view from the tower. I also came to find out that Mária’s boyfriend’s family was from the town and so we set out on a mission to find their house and get a picture of Mária in front of it. We got a bit side tracked by a homemade sweats table… I bought Turkish honey which is this nugget/marshmellowy cream with nuts between two wafers. It was heaven in my mouth… so good. We found the house, got a picture, and got bus to the bus with a few minutes to spare.

Then it was homeward bound… I fell asleep and in no time we were back in Bratislava. I walked Mária up to her room and in the process was invited to play some volleyball. So volleyball it was with a bunch of Polish people who didn’t speak english… or at least didn’t speak English to me. It wasn’t too terribly fun and so the following day I decided to pass up the offer. After such a long day I talked on skype, showered, and hit it. Excursion complete and successful!
