Day 11- Slovak Excursion- Part 1 Štvrtok (Thursday)

-Trenčin and Hrad (castle)
-Štrbské pleso (lake) and hike
-Popradské pleso (lake) and hike back

For the trip there were 4 groups and 4 buses going to different places; sometimes we meet up with another group but most of the time we were in smaller groups of about 40. Firstly, we had to be downstairs by 7:30 and some other groups 7:15 but all the buses didn’t leave until a bit after 8! It wasn’t too bad for our group because we weren’t much late to our first tour which was Trenčin and the castle.  The drive out was gorgeous once we got out of Bratislava because there is so much countryside with rolling hills and mountainous backdrops. Beautiful and I think a bit under appreciate by the rest of the world if I don’t say so myself.

Our first stop at Trenčin was very nice but in the aftermath I realize that things only got better. The castle itself was much more authentic than the Bratislava castle and it was way up above the town so there were some amazing sights. Beyond the main mountain range was the Czech Republic which is just incredible to think about. Also, here we were with another group and so I hung out with a bunch of Romanians and a boy, Zach, from Pennsylvania.

 Zach from PA

The two girls around me on the right is Alessandra and Carmen (I think) on the left, Zach in the back left, Flaviu back right, Valli in the front and Niku middle far right

 From the castle tower!!

The walk way back down to the city!

Tunnel back to the bus!

From there we got back on the bus and headed toward the High Tatras to see a lake and hike to another. I absolutely loved this of course. We were high in the mountains and so the air was so fresh and crisp.

Most of the hike I was in front and so I ended up talking with one of the assistants, Maria (we ended up becoming pretty good friends), and a teacher Lucia who taught me a bunch of new Slovak! (Maybe even more than in class!) I learned úžasné which means amazing and pod’me kamzícky which means let’s go mountain goats (this is what the teacher kept saying… it was great) and a few other useful phrases like Si normalny? Meaning are you normal and nemáš meaning no problem. I also got to eat wild raspberries and blueberries! After we got to the second lake, we took a break and I got to try some garlic soup which was very good.

This lake was pretty deep in the mountains and it is actually frozen most of the year. We walked back down and I spoke with Maria, the assistant most of the time. We were out for about 4 hours and so I was pretty tired like most everybody. We headed to the hotel, had dinner (chicken and rice for me), I showered and hung out in the lobby with a ton of people from the trip. Mainly I sat with the other two assistants, Vera and Veronica. The continued to teach me a bunch of new words and phrases! Overall it was an awesome day and I loved being outside in nature after being cooped up in the city for two weeks!

P.S. Here is the plan: I will right about the excursion about a post a day until I am caught up to the present and I will post for each day as well!!

P.P.S.  To see more pictures see facebook. They are already up!!
